When May and Pao first met, they were both at a college gathering. Pao remembered May as “the girl with the weird accent,” and May… well, she didn’t remember him at all! It wasn’t until the second time they met at a party where they actually engaged in deeper conversations. And thus the love story began.
They always say persistence is key in winning a girl’s heart, and that is exactly what Pao did. Every morning he would text May “Good morning,” and every night he would text May “Good night.” That made him stand out from the crowd.
Pao and May have been together for 6 years now, and as with any relationship, theirs had its ups and downs. They spent two of those years long distance, which is definitely rough on any relationship. However, they learned to communicate and care for each other, and their relationship flourished.
During the 2019 Superbowl weekend, as they finished a movie that night, May said to Pao, “I don’t want tomorrow to come because it means we are going to be apart again.” You see, May was working in Southern California at the time, so that’s where she needed to be during the weekdays. Right there and then, Pao reached into his bag, pulled out the ring, and responded with, “Do you want to be my wife?” I think we all know the answer!
Culture is very important to May, Pao, and their families. For their wedding, they decided to fuse the Western style wedding with the Hmong traditions. The actual wedding day started in May’s family’s house in Elk Grove. Their backyard is as beautiful as some of the actual wedding venues I’ve seen! They had the first look and family photos done in the backyard.
The reception was done at The Pavilion at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento. While the summer blaze was hard to bear, they had several AC fans to keep the guests cool. What I love most about the venue is the open area underneath the giant oak tree — it’s perfect for cocktail hour and for dancing the night away in a Sacramento summer night.
